Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of Core Aeration and Scarifying?

Core Aeration and Scarifying (Dethatching) each improve lawn health in different ways. Together, they help create a thicker, greener lawn:

  • Core Aeration
    • Relieves soil compaction, allowing roots to grow deeper and stronger.
    • Improves water, oxygen, and nutrient penetration into the soil.
    • Helps reduce water run-off and dry patches.
    • Encourages thicker, more resilient grass growth.
  • Scarifying / Dethatching
    • Removes built-up thatch (dead grass and organic matter) that blocks water and nutrients.
    • Prevents pests and diseases that thrive in thick thatch layers.
    • Stimulates new shoots and improves overall lawn density.
    • Enhances the effectiveness of fertiliser and watering.

When used together at the right time of year, aeration and scarifying rejuvenate your lawn, keeping it lush, healthy, and better able to handle seasonal stress.

How often should I aerate or scarify?

Aeration is usually needed only once a year, while scarifying or dethatching is best done every 1–2 years. The timing depends on your lawn type:

  • Warm-season grasses (Kikuyu, Couch, Buffalo, Zoysia): Best in spring, when growth is strong and recovery is fast.
  • Cool-season grasses (Tall Fescue, Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass, Fine Fescues): Best in autumn, when these grasses are most active.
How long will it take for my lawn to recover?

Usually 2–4 weeks with good watering and fertilising, depending on season and grass type.

Will my lawn look worse before it looks better?

Yes, both aeration and scarifying can make the lawn look rough at first, but recovery is quick, and the end result is a healthier, greener lawn.

How often should I water my lawn after aeration or scarifying?

After either service, your lawn benefits from consistent watering to aid recovery. Water lightly and regularly for the first 1–2 weeks to keep the soil moist, then return to your normal watering schedule. Avoid overwatering, as this can encourage shallow roots.

Should I reseed after aerating and scarifying?

Scarifying opens the soil and creates ideal conditions for overseeding. If your lawn has bare patches or thinning areas, applying seed straight after scarifying helps thicken the lawn and improve density.
